Steve's 1948 CJ2A
Serial number 197103
Engine is 1947
Body appears to be 1945 or maybe even MB, based on pioneer tool impressions. I'll have to vote against it being an MB since it has a tailgate.
Biography
The previous owner bought this CJ2A as a project, tore the front axle down, then found a
much better CJ2A and bought that. In a typical Willys trade, a snow plow was traded for
emptying his garage of the mess. I spent a few evenings putting a spare front axle on it
and towed it home. It is now buried in the family storage building and, as the ugliest
vehicle there, it serves as a landing spot for everyone's junk.
At some point in its long life, the CJ2A was "restored" with a galvanized body
wrap and a coat of burgundy paint. The hood appears to be modified from a truck hood and
the left front fender may be from the same pickup. A couple of really keen Volkswagen seats were added as well
as some new gauges to replace those old fashioned looking things. I'm
hoping we can talk Steve into replacing these with a set of original style
seats. Just joking, he already has a good set of seat frames for this baby. We will
need to uphoster them but they are solid. Apparently it was then run hard as both
front frame horns show repair from a hard landing. Today it has been stripped of brake
lines, wiring, and exhaust, but it does run quite well. The transmission and transfer case
work, but I've never had it out of first gear due to the lack of brakes. As you can see in
the photos, the engine is fairly complete with oil filter and oil bath air filter (not
shown).
The steering box needs rebuilt and the axles are a complete unknown. Other than the
front horn damage, the frame is in excellent condition and the tub bed and tailgate are as
good as I have seen. The windshield frame is a replacement from an MB and has no inner
frame. There is a pile of spare parts but still a lot missing.
It's as much a Fraken-Willys as any, but it can certainly become a 2A again.
